Benny the Blackbird and Sally the Seagull is a children’s love story with a difference. As you’ve probably guessed it is about a blackbird who falls in love with a seagull, and why not? This lovely story is about following your heart and embracing differences. It follows the adventures of this unusual couple as they fall in love and start a family. The story also tackles the subject of bullying and prejudice in a very child friendly manner.
The recommended age for this book is seven, and my seven year old was able to read it perfectly well unaided; my little ones also enjoyed having it read to them at bedtime. They loved the bright and colourful, full-page pictures by Tania Rawat and especially liked the little chicks. This is a great quick read, an ideal length for a bedtime story, and has an ending to prompt discussion and a fun activity for the children. I’m not going to spoil it though, you’ll have to read it yourself and find out.
