This is a lovely story for young children. I first read it as a bedtime story to my four year old. I had planned on just a couple of chapters but had to read it all as she wouldn’t settle without knowing what happened. Harvey and his friends are really sweet characters and their antics kept us entertained throughout. My daughter loved the idea of a howling mouse and joined in with the howling; perhaps bedtime was not the best time to read this! She also enjoyed looking at the pictures by Laura Dewsnap – we liked the pictures of Jinx the best.
My six year old then read it to me and enjoyed it just as much. The story moves along quickly and is fun and easy to read. The Mouse Who Howled At The Moon works well as a bedtime story but is also suitable for young readers. As a mum I liked the factual bit at the end. My six year old had been asking if there were grasshopper mice in real life so it was good to have the answers and I learnt something too. We look forward to reading Sarah Hindmarsh’s next book The Squirrel Who Travelled The World.
