‘Primed by the Past’ by Barbara Fagan Speake

510PR+1WOeL._SX304_BO1,204,203,200_What a superb read! Barbara Speake comes highly recommended and this book certainly lived up to my expectations. I instantly felt a bond with the main character, Annie Macpherson, a Scottish detective on an exchange programme to Connecticut. I found the blend of these two cultures made for an interesting twist to the usual detective novel. All the characters were very believable, each with their own quirks and habits, but Annie stood out as the perfect lead. She’s feisty, clever and tenacious but not perfect, it was her subtle flaws that made her seem all the more real. She became more like an old friend and I couldn’t wait to find out what she’d been up to, each time I put the book down. The plot is cleverly crafted, it moves swiftly with plenty of unexpected twists to keep you guessing until the end. Given the time, this is the kind of book you could read in one sitting because you won’t want to put it down. And the best thing about it, it’s only the first in a series featuring Annie Macpherson. After only a few chapters, I knew I would want to read them all; I have already downloaded the full series.

How could I not review the lovely Annie? I have the rest of the series just waiting on my Kindle.
