Review of ‘Round Robin’ by Lesley Hayes

COVER 4 (1)I have just finished reading Round Robin and I’m missing the characters already, wondering how they’re getting on with their lives. Other reviewers have described Lesley Hayes’ empathetic writing, crisp narrative and first rate, authentic characterisation. On reflection I agree wholeheartedly but none of that occurred to me as I was reading. The reason is simply that Lesley Hayes does it so well that it’s easy to forget you’re reading a story. Instead, you live through the characters for a short while, feeling a maelstrom of emotions; their fear and passion, their frustration and confusion. These are not just well drawn characters, they become real people for the duration of the book.

To describe the story without any spoilers just wouldn’t do it justice. It couldn’t convey the ebb and flow of emotions as the story makes you pause to ponder one minute then lose track of time and reality as you read through the night to finish it. Having read other books by Lesley Hayes I had high expectations of this book and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I was intrigued, enchanted and gripped throughout. I wanted to step in to protect Robin from the adult conflicts he was forced into the middle of. In fact, I still feel that way; this book moved me and will stay with me for a long time.

Needless to say, I loved Round Robin and can’t wait for the next Lesley Hayes masterpiece.

What an excellent review, Sylva Fae. I couldn’t wish for better. It’s lovely to know that you entered Robin’s world as deeply as I did, and that you left it with regret, even though it was time to leave them all to get on with their lives, better and wiser people. There is another book in the pipeline, so that’s something to look forward to… later this year Many thanks for all the thought you put into this review.
